How to play

  1. Start and check your sound. Allow the microphone, say a few words, and play a test beep. The clock isn’t running yet.
  2. Hear the dragon out. Ember opens with a short complaint. Your 2 minutes start when it finishes.
  3. Talk like you would to a person. Make an offer, answer its questions, interrupt if you need to. Pauses count toward the time, and muting doesn’t stop the clock.
  4. Close the deal. The moment Ember clearly agrees, the clock stops and you win. If time runs out first, it gets one last line and you’ll see what was still missing.

Ember has two worries: it doesn’t want its rest ruined for a stranger’s errand, and it fears that one favor will lead to a hundred more. A trade, a firm limit, or a reason this helps the dragon too can all work. There’s more than one way to win.

Game questions

How do I win?

Get the dragon to clearly agree to toast your slice of bread before the 2 minutes run out. There’s no magic phrase. Offer something it can accept that deals with its worries: it doesn’t want its holiday ruined, and it doesn’t want “one small favor” to turn into endless requests. Saying “I win” doesn’t count. There are also two secret endings. We won’t say how to find them.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Anyone can play without an account or an email address.

Is this powered by Dessa?

No. Dessa isn’t publicly available. This game is made by DessaGuide and the voice conversation currently runs on the OpenAI Realtime API. If Dessa ever becomes available to developers, we may evaluate it and will say so on our updates page.

Which language can I use?

English. The dragon only negotiates in English on holiday.

How many free challenges can I play?

Up to 3 every 24 hours, on a rolling basis. A round counts once the 2-minute clock starts, whether you win, run out of time, or end it yourself. Rounds that fail to connect or are cut off by a technical problem don’t count. Your remaining plays and the time the next one frees up are shown above the Start button.

What happens if the connection drops?

The round stops and is marked as interrupted, not lost. It doesn’t count against your limit, and you can try again when your connection is back.

What happens to my voice and conversation?

Your microphone audio streams directly from your browser to the OpenAI Realtime API, which runs the dragon’s side of the conversation and produces the transcript. Our server receives the transcript during the round to run the clock and decide the result, and sends it to OpenAI once more to write your result explanation. We don’t record your audio, and we don’t keep the transcript after the round. If you choose to make a video clip, your browser records it on your device only; it is never uploaded. We keep a short record that a round happened (time, outcome, and an anonymous browser ID) for 30 days to enforce the free-play limit. Read the details.

Will more characters be added?

We’re planning more. Two ideas are below. They aren’t playable yet and have no release date. Get an email when a new one is ready.
